MANILA – A member of majority-aligned Liberal Party (LP) warned the administration against going after former President Benigno Aquino III, after the justice department implied someone "higher than Senator Leila de Lima" may have benefited from the illegal drug trade at the national penitentiary.
"Who was higher than De Lima? They have to really be careful. Kapag dinamay na si PNoy, di na natin alam [kung ano ang mangyayari]," said Ifugao Representative Teddy Baguilat.
[When they involve PNoy, we won't know what will happen.]
"I'm not saying biglang magbabago ang alignments—that remains to be seen."
[I'm not saying alignments will suddenly change—that remains to be seen.]
It is not only LP legislators who might become involved, Baguilat said, but also those close to Aquino and officials of the previous administration.
"Di ko na alam ano magiging reaksyon ng kasamahan namin right now, except for a few of us na ang mindset is tahimik ka na lang muna," he said.
[I don't know how other legislators will react, except for a few of us who are set to keep quiet for now.]
During a House probe regarding the alleged involvement of De Lima in the illegal drug trade at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP), Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre implied the connection of an official higher than De Lima.
This was decried by De Lima, who served as Justice Secretary during Aquino's term.
"Is my president also a beneficiary of these things? You know PNoy. [These accusations are] very outlandish, very outrageous. They are becoming so reckless…it's getting to be laughable," she told the media on Thursday.
